Call Quality • Re: Jitter? 5ms or 30ms?

As the blog states: "there’s some debate about acceptable levels of network jitter". Ooma's network check tool color codes most of its performance metrics, (green=good, yellow=marginal, red=bad). The estimated ranges for jitter, (based on running some VoIP tests), are roughly:
  • green (< ~8 ms): connection can produce a constant flow of data; VoIP conversations should be of good quality
  • yellow (~9-30 ms): connection is relatively unpredictable, but should nonetheless be able to sustain a constant flow of data; VoIP conversations should not be broken
  • red (> ~30 ms): connection is too unpredictable to maintain a constant flow of data; VoIP conversations may be broken
So, anything less than 5 ms should be good. Anything between 5 to 30 ms may indicate some loss of call quality, but it should still be tolerable. For the actual jitter metrics, check the call statistics for the last ten phone calls, under the device settings 'Tools' menu.

Also check the other performance metrics. Jitter indirectly contributes to packet loss, which directly affects call quality; packet loss should be less than ~2-5%. MoS, ("Mean opinion score"), more broadly estimates overall call quality, on a scale from 1 to 5; it should be greater than ~4.0.
